What is Urogynecology?
Urogynecology is a specialized field of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor disorders in women. It combines elements of gynecology and urology to address conditions such as:
- Urinary incontinence
- Overactive bladder
- Interstitial cystitis
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Other issues affecting the pelvic muscles and tissues
Trained in Urogynecology, the physicians at the Women’s Health Center are experts in both non-surgical and surgical treatments, offering personalized care to help women regain comfort, confidence, and quality of life. Whether through physical therapy, medication, or minimally invasive procedures, urogynecology provides solutions tailored to each patient’s needs – often within our private office setting through medication, injections and other minimally invasive procedures.
Treatments include
- RIMSO bladder instillation
- Axonics®Therapy
- Botox and Coaptite injections
- Bladder Slings
What’s the difference between gynecology and urogynecology?
A gynecologist specializes in the female reproductive system, providing routine care, disease screenings, and treatments for menstrual issues, birth control, and menopause. Urogynecology, a subspecialty of gynecology, focuses on pelvic floor disorders, such as incontinence and prolapse, combining expertise in both gynecology and urology to address these conditions.
What conditions do urogynecology-trained physicians treat?
Our urogynecology-trained physicians specialize in diagnosing and treating pelvic floor disorders, including:
- Urinary incontinence – Leaking urine with activity (stress incontinence) or unexpectedly (urge incontinence).
- Overactive bladder – Uncontrolled bladder muscle contractions causing frequent urges and leaks.
- Nocturia (excessive nighttime urination) – Waking up multiple times at night to urinate.
- Bowel dysfunction – Sudden, uncontrollable urges to have a bowel movement or chronic constipation.
- Pelvic organ prolapse – When the bladder or uterus shifts downward, pressing against the vagina.
- Frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs) – Recurring infections in the bladder, kidneys, ureters, or urethra.
- Painful bladder syndrome (interstitial cystitis) – Chronic bladder inflammation causing discomfort and irritation.
- Urinary retention – Difficulty fully emptying the bladder.
- Pain during sex – Often linked to UTIs, prolapse, or other pelvic floor disorders.
If you’re experiencing any of these issues, the urogynecology-trained physicians at The Women’s Health Center can help you find relief and improve your quality of life.
